How to Avoid Impulse In-Game Purchases

Small digital purchases can feel less significant than physical ones, especially when a game uses virtual currency or a limited-time countdown. Adding friction restores perspective.

Convert virtual prices

Translate tokens or points back into your actual currency and include leftover virtual currency in the real cost. Compare the purchase with other entertainment you could choose.

Create a cooling-off rule

Wait at least a day for nonessential items. A timer ending soon is a marketing condition, not an emergency. If the item loses its appeal during the wait, the pause worked.

Reduce purchase friction in reverse

Remove saved payment details, require a password for every purchase, disable one-click buying, and set platform limits. Review statements regularly and discuss controls with children or shared-account users.
